Subject and object of a sentence

sometime it seems really difficult to identify whether something is the subject or object in a sentence - for example, if I said It takes teo minutes for a smell to travel to the part of the brain which controls memory and emotions. Clearly, the relative pronoun 'which' cannot be left out of the sentence so yhis surly makes the brain the subject but I cannot see it! Help

You have a sentence with multiple clauses, so there may be multiple subjects and multiple objects. subjects / objects It takes ten minutes for a smell to travel to the part of the brain which ( = part ) controls memory and emotions . And on a higher level it is a dummy place holder for the subject of the sentence as a whole: It takes ten minutes for a smell to travel to the part of the brain which controls memory and emotions.
