I want to use the word "subject" when talking about a piece of writing. When I hear the word subject I think more of like a painter or a more visual artist's subject. Is there a better word than subject when talking about an article's subject. The only thing I can think of is "topic," but that sounds worse. My sentence starts "Its subject is …"
