Styling preference with am and pm

A lot of people are now writing 'a.m.' and 'p.m.' without the periods. Which is preferred below -- #1 with no space on each side of the hyphen or a single space on each side of the hyphen? Do most agree that the periods should be omitted?

He will work from 8 am-5 pm.

He will work from 8 am - 5 pm.

Thanks once again.

Hi, I almost always omit the periods. Personally, I wouldn't use a hyphen in your example. I'd write either He will work 8 am - 5 pm or He will work from 8 am to 5 pm.
