Stupid question ?

This is probably very stupid question, but it bothers me.

Why quoted/direct speech in grammar lessons is always like this:
Sandra said, "I´m goin to eat 10 hamburgers"
Is it possible to write like this: "I´m going to eat 10 hamburgers," Sandra told me.
Does it always have to be SAID?
Is this also direct/quoted speech: "Where did the accident take place," I asked him.
And does it matter is "I asked him" in the beginning or in the end?

Thank you!
