Could someone help me out with the following:

After months of study,

Both are correct. In the first, the noun "study" is the object of the preposition "of". In the second, the object of the preposition is the gerund "studying".

Hello Anon

A gerund is the noun-form of a verb. It embodies the process or action of the verb.

So:

1. studying = what happens when someone studies
