Study at (a) university

I have made up the sentences below.

(1) I think Mary's son wants to study at university instead of getting a job after high school graduation.

(2) I think Mary's son wants to study at a university instead of getting a job after high school graduation.

Do I need the indefinite article? Thank you very much for your help.
