Question

Here are examples that I have come across before.

I will futher my studies.
fond of study
give all one's spare time to study
my studies show that ......
study time
My textbook says "I could see from his work that he had made an intensive studies of the subject." is wrong and it should be "I could see from his work that he had made an intenseve study of the subject."

the words "study' above show same meaning , how come some of them are in plural form and some of them are in singular forms.

I can't figure out when I should use studies when I should use study.

It's not any different than other rules for plural and singular.

In school, we have many subjects - science, language, art, mathematics.
So we can further our studies (many subjects).
But we can do an intensive study into the lives of the honey bees. (a study is an investigation on one subject)
And we can set aside 2 hours every evening to study. (study is a verb, not a noun)
And we can set aside 2 hours every evening for our studies. (many subjects).

Darwin devoted his life to the study of evolution. (one subject)

The artist did many preliminary studies before he painted his masterpiece.
(here a study means an artist's sketch)
