Study and research

Hi
I would like some help with the following
In their study/research on birds
In their study/research of birds
In their study/research into birds
I'm not sure of the difference between on, of and into when using study or research. Can any of them be used or can they only be used in certain situations?
Thanks
Thomas

Anonymous I'm not sure of the difference between on, of and into when using study or research. 'Study on/into' and 'research of' do not work; the rest are OK.
