I'm new here! I'm Portuguese and I'm currently writing a thesis in English. I have a question that I need help with.

Which of the following options is correct (if any...):

"This study allowed to evaluate the strength capacity of the material."

"This study allowed evaluating the strength capacity of the material."

"This study allowed the evaluation of the strength capacity of the material."

"With this study it was possible to evaluate the strength capacity of the material."

I realize that I still have one doubt.

So, is it, in general, incorrect to say something like:

"X allows(ed) (for) the Y (...)"

Examples:

The tests allow the assessment of (...).

The good weather allowed the party to be held outside.

The new car allowed for a very comfortable trip.

Allow has the meaning of giving permission or ability.

The good weather (as opposed to stormy weather) allowed the party to be held outside. This is OK, but seems a bit formal.

The new car (as opposed to an old beater or clunker) allowed for a very comfortable trip. This is not quite natural.

Ok, thanks. This is hard for me to understand because it's one of those expressions that we use in Portugal (to allow = ´permitir') - I've used it in scientific articles that were published, so I assumed it was ok. But recently I realized that using the word "allow" in this way was not very common...

The meaning of "allow" fits nicely in this sentence and may be exactly what you were trying to say. It means the study left open the possibility of evaluating the strength capacity of
