Student Participation Record

Hi teachers! I'm an English teacher in Indonesia. I'm thinking about taking my students' participation record. This idea came out because my intermediate-class students are so quiet, they feel reluctant to speak. I'm also going to find out if this participation record will work effectively through Classroom Action Research. So,teachers, would you like to share your experience on how you conduct the record in classes, please? Thanks a bunch.

Regards,

Hello, newbee. I don't maintain such a record, so I don't know how effective it might be. Instead, I concentrate on making the shy students as comfortable as possible, encouraging (but not badgering) them to speak on occasion, and complimenting them when they do.

  • I suspect that your intermediate students are teenagers, who are often shy to speak up on other subjects as well, and you should keep in mind that much (if not most) 2nd language is learnt through the other 3 skills.
  • Having said that, I see nothing wrong with your keeping a private participation record out of interest.

Dear Mister Micawber,

I have tried some ways to make them speak English such as putting them in small groups, giving them classroom language, creating collaborative activities, etc. I've tried also to modify the group members just to find out which formation can make them comfortable and eager to speak English. But these ways didn't make any differrence. They just kept silent or used Baha

Anything is worth a try, new_bee. But from the description in your link, it doesn't sound like it will make them 'comfortable and eager'.

Note his later comment:

Some people might say that such a program would further demoralize a poor student. That may be true if used by itself in isolation. But a significant function in a school is early detection and then identification of a

No, I have no suggestions beforehand; you know as much about this process as I do. I would certainly like to see your CAR results, though. Good luck!
