Essay & Composition Writing

Student & one(substitution)

1. Marco is certainly a clever Italian student of English, but Paolo is an absolutely brilliant one.

2. Marco is certainly a clever Italian student of English, but Paolo is an absolutely brilliant student.

Is 'student' in #2 the same as 'one' in #1? (that means 'student' in #2 cannot means, for example, a student of geography?)

Top answer

No. #2 is both poorly composed and ambiguous as to the 2nd 'student'.

Anyway,

Could you please tell me how those two sentences can avoid ambiguity and be composed nicely?
