Student from/of a higher semester

Hi,

Would you say

The phrases, "a student from/of a higher semester", are understandable, but improper usage. Perhaps this is because you would never say something like this in English, because, of course, any student who is not a new student would have more experience than a new student. Obvious things like this are not given voice in English.
