struggle/fight to do something

Hello,
Could you tell me why "struggle" doesn't work in these sentences: "Thousands of people are fighting to beat cancer." and "Local campaigners are fighting to save the hospital from closure."? I was told that "struggle" wouldn't make any sense in it. I think that "struggle = to make an effort in order to do something."

Thank you

Okay, fair enough, but aren't people struggling to beat cancer? Is it easily cured? I think that's one of the most horrible things that could happen to someone.

The sickest people with cancer do struggle to survive.
But in general, we like to use a more optimistic verb and say they are fighting their disease, and that they will be cured.
