Structure of these sentences

Hi. I don't understand the structure of these two sentences, or similar ones:
"Trey was tall, towering over his peers."
"Drinking decreases his inhibitions, giving him a sense of belonging."
What sort of phrase is the part of each sentence after the comma? And why do I need a comma? I need a grammatically technical answer. No nonsense about "it just looks right".
