Structure of the sentence

Hello,

Please explain me the structure of the sentence bellow.(Precisely how we can use would to situations)

Animals can often react more appropriately than they otherwise would to situations they encounter.

Thanks

It is a shortening of: Animals can often react more appropriately than they otherwise would do [ = would react ] to situations they encounter. In isolation, the sentence is semantically incomplete though. It needs more context to show what "otherwise" contrasts with.
