Structure

Hello,

1.The ability to write well is essential for any journalist.

I am not able to understand the structure of the sentence. The main confusion is about the subject of the sentence.

"the ability" = noun with determiner
to write = infinitive

Can we write "noun+to infinitive" as the subject of the sentence?

Could any one here explain the construction of the sentence?

Thanks.
