structure

I found this example in the on-line dictionary.
And it is not difficult to understand what it means.
But I have no idea why the present participle is there.
What is the possible paraphrase?

e.g. Regular exercise strengthens the heart, thereby reducing the
risk of heart attack.

But you said that you already understand the meaning. 'Reducing' is the head of a non-finite participial clause: 'reducing...attack'.

Thank you for the answer,
It is the present participle itself as it appears to be.
I don't know why it was so hard to find out that paraphrase as you answer it so easily.
Thanks again.
