Hi everyone.
I was reading Goodbye, Mr Chips and I came upon the following sentence which got me confused. Could you tell me what "strike" and "undvertised cold spell" means?
He was not ill, of course — only a little tired at times, and bad with his breathing during the winter months. He would not go abroad — he had once tried it, but had chanced to strike the Riviera during one of its carefully unadvertised cold spells.
"strike" means something like "come upon" or "encounter". "carefully unadvertised" is humorous: the Riviera is supposed to be a warm place; they don't tell you that sometimes it can be cold.

He travelled to the Riviera. This is a very famous vacation area of southern France and northern Italy on the Mediterranean Sea. Usually the weather is mild and warm. But when he got there, he was disappointed because it was unexpectedly cold. The cold weather was not advertised in the travel brochure.
