Strike it rich

Hi everyone. I know exactly what that expression means but I can't figure out why it's said that way. could someone help me? thank you.

Here's just a wild guess. Miners commonly hit (ie strike ) rocks with a hammer. gold is considered a valuable (ie rich ) metal.
