When the panda came to know that the girl had been killed, trying to save his life, he was stricken with sadness / sorrow.

Yes, "grief" is more particularly about someone being killed. As for sadness and sorrow, you can feel sadness about something that doesn't involve you directly, like a sad event you hear about in the news, while my feeling is that sorrow also gives a sense of personal regret, as in the example about the panda.
