STRESS VS DISTRESS

I have an argument with one of my co-worker with regards to this word "stress & distress" she insisted that distress must be used instead of stress, however I contradicted since distress should be used depending on the level of stress an individual is experiencing, plus the fact that stress & distress according to Cambridge dictionary;

stress - great worry caused by a difficult situation.

distress - extreme worry, sadness, pain.

so Eustress & distress is simply the reaction of individuals on how they response to stress.

What would be the correct word to say stress or distress?
