"strenuous" circumstances

Hi, I'm very sure that is the wrong word. Could someone be kind enough to provide the right word and also explain the phrase with an example? Thank you very much.

A person's effort in difficult circumstances might be strenuous, but the circumstances would not be. The circumstances might be difficult, tedious, challenging, laborious, or grueling. These are some words that might work well for you.

Is there a word that sounds like the word "strenuous" that goes with circumstances. I know strenuous is definitely the wrong word, but I heard the phrase a couple of times, but could never make out the first word of the two.
