strength cough medicine

I'm sorry, but what is a " strength cough medicine"?

I've searched the web, and I know that it's a medication for coughing. But then why the word "strength" here? It's definitely an adjective for the medicine, not for the coughing symptoms, as the dictionary indicates.

Perhaps what you heard/read was 'prescription-strength cough medicine'.

"prescription-strength" describes a medicine that is considered exceptionally 'strong' and as such can't be bought without a prescription (a piece of paper you get from a doctor).

"strength cough medicine" doesn't really make sense to me as it stands. There must have been some word in front of it.
