Strapless number

Ash wore an outfit by Lebanese designer Elie Saab’s Spring collection for the festival opening. She chose a black Armani Prive strapless number on the second day and a pink Gucci gown on the third day. However, she surprised many by coming for the premiere of Outrage in saree. She looked gorgeous with her hubby Abhishek Bachchan by her side.

Please explain to me what "number" means here.
I understood the whole sentence that it means he wore a strapless cloth on the second day but I wonder what it means by 'number' over there.

I get the feeling the speaker is being somewhat derogatory.

I just see "number" as the neutral "piece of clothing" -- "dress" in this case.

Hi,

When I was a young teenager, we found hilarious the expression,

'She wore a gownless evening strap'. Emotion: embarrassed

Thank you all.
Now I got it.

I think you are pointing to me but really I didn't know the sentences like "she wore a gown/dress" was a derogatory one and I found it's very common. Maybe now I shall avoid "wear a dress" and start saying "put up a dress" if I'm not wrong.

I think there's some misunderstanding here. There's nothing remotely derogatory about "she wore
