strange sentence

Hi there. Please help me with the last part of this sentence.

"And sure, everyone in my family dreaded the coming cold and flu season, but again, I thought come January everyone develops some degree of germophobia."

Is it written correctly? Does it mean something like "...but again, I thought by the time January comes everyone develops..." And if it is correct, where can I learn more about this kind of clause?

Thanks. M

You are right. It is an idiomatic use of come and means "when January comes". There is also an old movie called Come September.

It's correct and means what you say.

"come" followed by a time reference is an idiomatic phrasing. For example, "come January", "come Monday", "come next week", and so on. I would guess that "come" was originally a subjunctive verb form.
