A friend of mine said that his grandmother used to say, "Hearty man ate a toad", but he had no idea of what it meant, or where it came from. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

This may be no help at all. A friend of mine whose grandparents were poor Irish immigrant farmers in West Quebec (the last generation that stayed on the land) said they sometimes ate a kind of thick biscui
