Strange news formation: Microsoft's Play for Yahoo | Hollywood Writers Back to Work

Refer to http://www.voanews.com/specialenglish/2008-02-15-voa1.cfm for the news.

This news is strange to me. It combines two parts, Microsoft--Yahoo story and Writer's strike, which have a loose connection. Any comment about this?

BTW, I also have two questions.

1. Regarding the title Microsoft's Play for Yahoo. What's that 's following Microsoft mean?

2. At the end of this news, many guilds or unions are mentioned. What are the relations between them? In particular, what does the reporter what to convey by the mention of these guilds?

Thanks a lot.
