Strange idiom "tail end of our search" please help me

hello

this quote is an answer i have received after applying to a job, honestly the expression used to answer is unusual and extremly unclear, i have asked to an university professor of english but not a native speaker (of the highest rank !!) and he confessed that he cannot really know what the writter wanted to say exactly. now i have no other choice to ask for your help YOU NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS !!

the answer is : your application is at the tail end of our search, we will let you know about next steps in due time.


is it positive or negative, i haven't a clue !! this "tail end of our search" gives me the impression that

1)i am very far on a waiting list, it is hopeless (negative)

2)they have been searching desperatly for somebody and my application arrives at the right moment (positive)

3)another meaning maybe ...
