Strained atmosphere

There was a strained atmosphere at the dinner table.

Is 'strained atmosphere' fitting here to describe that the atmosphere between those seated at the dinner table wasn't relaxed and natural? I'm just uncertain whether 'strained atmosphere' also would describe the atmosphere to not be friendly which is not what I intend. Can you help?
