strain of flu

Is it possible to talk about a strain when talking about the flu in general?
The strain of the flu nowadays has gotten weaker. I remember a few years ago, I'd be sick a week, now I'm only sick a day.

Is this sentence natural since I've used 'talk about twice'?
Is it possible to talk about a strain when talking about the flu in general?
