It's "a tendency to cruelty"; his father was prone to cruelty.

Hi Pieanne.

It can also mean his father had a genetic (inherited) predisposition toward cruelty.
A 'strain' can be a line of genetic descent.

I have a genetic predisposition toward the consumption of huge amounts of apricot pie, Anne. Yummie! But, not meaning to confuse the issue, this puts a strain on my budget!

Apricot pie, indeed! (with almonds?) Emotion: stick out tongue That's typical for a "fin de race", I'm afraid... Poor Mike!

Too much pie, and you never get to the end of the race.
