Story turned

Her eyes never swerved to left or right but turned as the story turned as if they followed a yellow line down the center of IT.
Two questions, first ,what does story turned" mean?
Second ," they" refers to "eyes"what does "IT" refer to ? If it refers to "story"So how could "eyes" follow a yellow line of "a story"?
