Stopped Finding/Painting

He stopped finding an algorith that could be configured for any link.

He stopped/finished painting the perfect Oscar Host.

Is it right the former is ungrammatical and the latter is grammatical?

Moreover, If I change "stop finding" into "stop looking for", is it grammatical?
