Stop to Eat or Stop Eating

For example:

If you are making a journey by car, you might stop to eat at a roadside restaurant.

When you are full and don't want to eat any more, you stop eating. People (or animals) might also stop eating (temporarily) when they are ill.

stop (going somewhere) because you want to eat something.

I can see an adult English learner's confusion about this, which is second nature to a native English speaker, something we never think about. "To eat" and "eating" can both function noun-like: "To eat is a necessity in order to survive." "Eating is necessary in order to survive." #1 I stopped to call you (I interrupted another action in order to call you).

#2 I stopped calling you ( I stopped this activity. Maybe we had a fight).

These examples will further illustrate the difference b/w "stop to eat" and "stop eating".
