Stop after next

Is THE optional?:

-I will do it the year after (the) next. (=after (the) next year)
-The stop after (the) next is the station. (=after the next stop.) (The second one is a bit more difficult; we could sure say NEXT YEAR, without THE; but NEXT STOP, without THE, is impossible.)

Top answer

In the first sentence, yes, the is optional. In the second sentence, I wouldn't say the is absolutely necessary, but it sounds clearer to use it.

I say only 'the year after the next' and 'the station after the next'.

I might say 'the station after the next one', but would not say 'the year after the next one'.
