Stone-Step Memories?

Hello everybody.

I'm reading How Do You Live by Genzaburo.

Would you please tell me what Stone-Step Memories mean?

Doesn't it mean unforgettable memories?

To be honest, facing the three boys would be really hard. But to be
friends with them again, the way it was before, was what he wanted
most. No, it was what he needed. So there was nothing to do but
apologize so that everyone would feel better—this, even Copper could
see. But what should he say in his apology?

I am not sure if I got the bold part. Would you please tell me what it implies?

Thanks so much ????

Doesn't it mean unforgettable memories? It's not any kind of known expression or anything. We have stepping stones, which are stones laid in a row on the ground or across a stream that you can walk upon to keep your feet clean or dry.

  • I have to guess that the unfortunate translator got caught up in the Japanese of it and forgot he could make it "stepping-stone memories".
  • I can't say for sure out of context what that is supposed to mean, but I get the way my memory of my own life consists of something like detached tableaux in sequence.
