Stone-Faced vs. A Blank Face

First of all, is it better to spell it "stone-faced or "stonefaced," without the hyphen? Second, is it synonymous with staring blankly, or is having a blank expression on one's face slightly different somehow?

Thanks.

stone-faced, stony-faced = blank but in use it usually suggests that the person is repressing some emotion.
