It really is the connotations of the words. Stimulation is the thought of being interested in food so the astronauts are not enticed by something coming out of a bag witch they suck on as food as there is no visual and textural enticement. Hunger is wrong because the astronauts might still get hungry but they don't have a hunger to eat (they don't want to spend lots of their time eating).
