still vs however? NEW CONCEPT ENGLISH 3.2

'You certainly did give me a surprise!' said the vicar. 'You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.'

Can I substitute 'however' for 'still' here?

Grammatically, there is no problem. But it will not be much of a joke anymore.

If you're writing a formal essay/academic paper etc., I would not use the word 'Still' interchangeably with 'However'.

'However' is better in these kinds of situations.

You could also consider using words like 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover'.

True. I totally agree with you. However, depending on the context there are situations where they could be used and that's why I mentioned 'could consider'.

You can make that substitution, but I prefer "Even so".
