Still Going

0Hi!02br

00Last time I posted is now good two months ago. It is certainly good to be back.02br

00Sometimes when a waiter asks, "Are you finished eating this?" people say, "Still going." What is the omitted subject of the sentence? The food or dish? Or, I?02br

0 I've never said this, but I would assume that the slow eater means that "01font00I am02font00 still going." One could also add an object to the sentence: "01font00I am 02font00still going 01font00on this pork chop02font00," but "going" makes for an odd verbal.

00To be precise, I heard this oftentimes in the U.K., and can't really remember if it was "still going" or "still going on." But I'm certain it was "still going" with an ascending tone.02br

0 Yep, I still suspect that the implied subject and verb are 01font00I am02font00 as if the waiter had asked "Are you 01font00still going02font00 on this?" "Yes, (I am) still going." 0-

0 Yeah, Jim, "working on it" was what came to mind for me too, and then I had this uncomfortable image of diners in a restaurant as dogs all working on big bones. 0-
