Stereotypical?

For my english course I had to write an essay on advertising and I used the word stereotypical. My teacher said that the word stereorypical doesn't exist, but it is in my dictionary. Is my teacher wrong about this?

This is how I used the word:

'This is not the only negative aspect of advertising. A lot of advertisements are full of stereotypical representations of women, gay people and ethnic minorities. In a world where there already is a lot of prejudice, this is potentially dangerous. Stereotypes in ads will not only strenghten these prejudices and increase stigmatization; they may also directly hurt the people that are being stereotyped.'

Did I use the words stereotypical, stereotypes and stereotyped correctly?

"Stereotypical" is definitely a word, and I would say that you've used it and all the related words you've mentioned correctly.

I'm afraid "stereotypical" does exist... along with "stereotypic".
I've found it in "Hyperdictionary", it is mentioned in Webster, and there are over one million entries in Google.
As far as I can see, you used the words correctly, but maybe wait til a native speaker sees your post...

Yes, the word definitely exists. here are some definitions from OED

Sterotype:
Noun. A fixed idea that people have about what someone or something is like, especially an idea that is wrong, e.g. racial/sexual stereotypes

He doesn't conform to/fit/fill the national stereotype of a Frenchman.
The characters in the book are just stereotypes.

Thanks for the replies everyone. When I wrote my essay I didn't even consider the possibility that stereotypical isn't a word, so when my teacher said that 'stereotypical' doesn't exist, I was really confused (especially because she's a native speaker).
Now I feel confident that the word does exist and maybe now I can teach my teacher something

stereotype means saying someone's personality by their background or face like.

Yes, Starter. Just so.

So, a stereotypical British businessman, for example, is a cold, humourless person who wears a bowler hat to work. (That's a bit outdated, but it gives an example.

A stereotypical blonde woman is good looking but stupid! ("dumb blonde")

Don't forget the red carnation on the lapel!

PS. I hope nobody's a blonde here!

Bother, forgot the carnation. never mind, he can wear this[W]and carry thisEmotion: umbrella

As for blonde posters, they will obviousl

As for blonde posters, they will obviously realise that they do not fit the stereotype, and that will help them understand what stereotyping is all about.

I think I remember a thread about this?
