Which of them are always plural?

Stairs or steps?

I climbed up the stairs.

Dear Michael Steps can be singular or plural.. - There is only one step up to the front door - There are five steps up to the front door I would always use stairs in the plural but you might find it in the singular - perhaps in Scotland or in song or poetry.. " Regards, Dave

Steps can be singular or plural..

- There is only one step up to the front door

- There are five steps up to the front door

I would always use stairs in the plural but you might find it in the singular - perhaps in Scotland or in song or poetry..

"Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn’t there.."
