step in/on

Hi,

1.Should I use 'step in' or 'step on' here?
2.Can I use 'a heap of' instead of 'a pile of' here?
3.Should I use 'dog's crap' or 'dog crap' here?

"He carelessly stepped in/on a pile of/a heap of dog crap/dog's crap."

Thanks.

Then, can I use 'a heap of' in the example?
Is there any difference between 'a heap of' and 'a pile of' in the example I gave?
Could you please tell me which word I can use to replace '****' here to make it sound more polite?

Thanks.
