Hi,

What does 'but instead stepped aside' mean in the context ?

Jane reminded Jason that it was Mark's house, too, and that Mark's could have demanded to stay, but instead stepped aside so Jason could stay there to recuperate. She explained that as soon as Jason was well, Mark would move back in.
