Hello.
Which word should one choose if he wanna say that in university he was good at a few units?strength in math?or competence in math?or possibly something else?

Do you mean it shows interest in that course?What if one wants to say the courses are his main bastions?
And is 'competence' a wrong word here?

He is strong in math means that he is very, very good at it.

His skills are adequate. But strong skills sounds better.
