Steer

Hi,

The car turned right but there was another car that had pulled up (it was there before the driver took the turn) on the right side of the road right behind the bend.

"The driver had to steer sharply to the left to avoid the other car."

"The driver had to steer the other way/in the opposite dirrection to avoid the car." (He was turning right but then he had to turn the steering wheel to the left.)

Are both of these sentences possible in the situation which I've just described here?
