Stays/staying on the reduced level

What is the correct option staying or stays? Can you please let me know if I have mistakes in this text?

It's only an assumption that it would have been reduced to, sort of minor loneliness that is less powerful, not the same feeling of distress and emotional difficulty. That feeling would have been reduced but stays/staying on the reduced level, sort of in the back of your mind.
