Stay put

Hi,

Example: "Stay put until I get back" [+]

(1) What part of speech is "put" in [+]?

(2) I guess 'stay put' looks a bit unusual to many English learners. I wonder if native speakers too "feel" this expression is .... kind of unique? at least as compared to "stay here/there" and other straightforward stay + adverb constructs?

Looking forward to your comments!
