Stay away

Hello, great people there. How are you? Today I have brought a controversial issue, I think.

"Stay away"

Some teachers say the speech part of "away" is an adverb but the others say it can be an adjective and adverb, depending on speakers' view, so I really would like to hear your opinions on it. Could you tell me which one is more correct?

Thank you in advance as usual.
