Vocabulary

Stay alert, stay contrary.

What does "But both are valid, neither is exclusive. Stay alert, stay contrary." mean here? I think "But both are valid, neither is exclusive" is saying that scientific and non scientific methods, both are sometimes valid but none of them is more competent than the other one". AM I right? How about the second part?

Context:

Indeed, pioneering scientists have always challenged the status quo, operating through guesswork and intuition sometimes more than through deductive logic. But both are valid, neither is exclusive. Stay alert, stay contrary. And think of evolution which has advanced at random and without any vision or goal.

But both are valid, neither is exclusive. This means that both deductive logic and guesswork/intuition are (equally) valid scientific methods and that one doesn't exclude the other or vice versa. " This, in my opinion, means that scientists should be able to think clearly ( stay alert ) but also question exisiting scientific paradigms ( stay contrary )
